Fat reduction treatments have significantly progressed over recent years, offering patients a wide array of options to choose from, from Hot Sculpting to CoolSculpting and everything in between. To give you a better idea of the difference between Hot Sculpting and CoolSculpting, we have answered some questions about the two types of fat reduction treatments below!

How does Hot Sculpting work?

Hot Sculpting uses heat to get rid of stubborn areas of fat through a process known as thermolipolysis. Thermo refers to heat, lipo to fat cells, and lysis is the disintegration of a cell. Typically, the heat is generated by a laser, but another method includes the application of radiofrequency (RF) energy to the treatment area.

In general, a Hot Sculpting procedure involves the use of laser-emitting devices on targeted areas of the patient’s body, particularly areas where they would like to see less fat. The laser-emitting device generally creates a sensation of warmth in the treatment area but does not cause any pain as it sends laser energy to the fat cells.

Furthermore, the skin in the treatment area remains unaffected, besides some slight redness, as the laser targets fat cells underneath the skin. Once the laser energy reaches the fat cells, they “melt away,” so to speak.

How does CoolSculpting work?

In contrast to Hot Sculpting, CoolSculpting gets rid of stubborn areas of fat by freezing the fat cells, as you may have deduced by the name! The name for the fat freezing process is cryolipolysis.

A CoolSculpting procedure involves the use of a vacuum device shaped like a wand that targets small areas of skin on the patient’s body. The wand gently sucks in the skin and quickly freezes fat cells in the targeted area to trigger their natural death. Once the fat cells are frozen, your body will gradually eliminate them through your lymphatic system, which sends them to your kidney and liver for waste removal.

What are the benefits of Hot Sculpting and CoolSculpting?

The primary benefit that both Hot Sculpting and CoolSculpting share is that both procedures are non-invasive. As such, they are generally less expensive than surgical fat reduction treatments like liposuction, require little to no downtime, and pose fewer risks for infection since no scalpels are used to open up and operate under your skin.

That said, both procedures provide numerous additional benefits. For instance, one benefit of CoolSculpting is the small area the CoolSculpting wand covers. Since the CoolSculpting wand covers a small area, the procedure can be customized and tailored easily to fit the patient’s needs. While Hot Sculpting covers a larger area than CoolSculpting, there are also benefits to that aspect, such as increased skin tightening in the treatment area.

Another benefit that both procedures share is the versatility of the areas they can treat. CoolSculpting can be used to reduce fat around the abdomen, back and bra area, thighs, underneath the buttocks, flanks and love handles, upper arms, and underneath the chin. Likewise, Hot Sculpting can be used on the arms, belly, buttocks, back, and thighs.
