Laser lipolysis (also commonly referred to as laser lipo) is a cosmetic procedure that removes the subcutaneous fat that is considered unwanted or excess. With only the need for local anesthesia and a small incision, the unwanted membranes of fat are liquefied by lasers and are then removed from the site by the use of a cannula (a device that suctions). Patients who are chosen to undergo this procedure are typical of what is considered a healthy or normal body weight and only wish to be rid of specific areas of fat that have proven stubborn even with proper diet and exercise. The patient should also be of good health as with all minimally invasive procedures, there lies a small risk of infection, so only treating healthy patients helps to minimize that risk.

After undergoing a laser liposuction treatment, it is very common to experience some swelling and light bruising at the site of treatment, which should go away on its own within two weeks. It is recommended that patients wear a compression garment to help minimize that swelling and smoother the skin, as well as start giving themselves lymphatic massages to help the area heal beautifully.

Recovery time required may also depend on the quantity of area that was treated, as those with only small areas that were treated may only need to take a few days off from work and regular activities, and those who have undergone more extensive laser lipo may require a longer recovery time to make sure that the healing process goes smoothly.
